Gerneral Information
At the Grier School, we believe a full education includes participation in artistic and creative endeavors. Grier Summer offers a three-week program in creative and performing arts. Campers choose five different elective activities from a variety of creative and recreational options, and they attend their activities daily. Choices may include arts and crafts, drawing and painting, theatre, stagecraft, creative writing, photography, ballet, jazz, choreography, swimming, and sports.
All campers at Grier Summer live in dormitory rooms according to age. Each dorm room houses two people, and there is a bathroom connecting every two rooms. The rooms include two beds, two dressers, two desks, and two closets. Two counseling staff are assigned to each unit of 6-8 campers. The counselors live in the hall, very close to the campers. Counselors are college-age women, and we sometimes employ exceptional high school seniors to assist the counselors.
In a three-week session at Grier Summer, each camper follows her individual activity schedule for 13 days of the session, including Saturdays and Sundays. On Thursdays, we have special events such as theme days with entertainers. On Mondays, campers attend field trips to local attractions.
Grier Summer is accredited by the American Camp Association, meeting over 200 standards for health and safety, site and facilities, administration, and camper programs. We have fewer than 100 campers at a time, and would love for you to become a member of our camp family.
Theatre
Directed by Grier faculty member, Kristina Cole, theatre at Grier Summer is fun and inclusive. Campers play improvisational games, learn how to read a script, analyze characters, and perform for an audience.
Stagecraft
Stagecraft includes the “behind the scenes” activities necessary for preparing for a theatrical performance. Campers learn how to construct sets and props, design costumes, apply makeup, operate lights, and work as a team to assure the smooth running of a theatre production.
Arts and Crafts
Campers enrolled Grier Summer may sign up for arts and crafts as an elective in their daily schedule. Campers are divided according to age whenever possible for their arts and crafts sessions. Arts and crafts is taught by counselors who are skilled and creative. We have access to the Grier School art facilities, and campers are able to pursue a variety of projects in areas such as ceramics, jewelry making, tie-dye, weaving, and other crafts.
Drawing and Painting
In drawing and painting, campers complete assignments designed to teach some of the important fundamentals of fine art. The varieties of mediums include pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor, tempera, or acrylics.
Dance
Campers in the Creative and Performing arts program at Grier Summer may sign up for one or more periods of dance as an elective activity in their daily schedule. Campers may choose ballet, jazz, and / or choreography. Dance for Grier Summer is taught by counselors with dance experience, and we divide campers according to their ability and experience. At the end of the session, campers perform in a dance recital the evening before the big horse show. For serious dancers, see our Grier Summer Intensive Dance Program.
Creative Writing
Campers practice using words to express themselves creatively, through poetry, short story, essay and group projects.
Photography
Campers learn the fundamentals of black and white photography, including darkroom techniques. Single lens reflex (SLR) camera is required.
